If you haven't yet read the news page please do! This thread is meant to detail some of the reasons behind why I've decided to let Darias take over for me as guild leader, and to reassure you that you will continue to have the best guild on the planet.

With no classes this summer and a bit of extra time on my hands, I've re-evaluated my career and education goals and have come to the conclusion that what I want most is a good solid shot at a graduate-level education. I've been fascinated with my topic of study since I was a kid, and too often distractions come up on that long path that while worthy of one's time, can also make a person waver from their ultimate goal. This extra time to myself has helped re-motivate me and I can't wait for September to arrive.

I have learned countless things as a guild leader, more than I will probably ever realize. But it is an experience I would recommend everyone try, or at least I encourage you to not be shy online or in real-life when it comes to taking on new challenges. Even within our guild we're always looking for people to come up with new ideas or critiques, and especially people who want to volunteer their time to make a new idea work. If not, then just being friendly and outgoing are excellent contributions and an easy thing to try to develop.

Knowing that this day would eventually arrive, I've kept an eye on how a change like this would occur and who it would go to. Darias, as I mentioned in my news post, is a fantastic guild member and an excellent community leader. He's receptive, honest, straight-forward and patient, and his appointment to guild leader will ensure the Sleeper Cartel stays at the forefront of top-notch World of Warcraft guilds. Supported by the officers, emissaries and the members, it will be an exciting time for our guild and I can't wait to see and participate in what happens.

Long live SC! =)

You would be hard pressed to find a single person still in this guild -- and a good many of those who've moved onto other opportunities -- who would say anything less than you have been what has made this guild what is today. Seeing a flaw in what guilds in the community-at-large offered, you worked at creating something truly unique. I for one count myself lucky for having fallen onto this server to have the chance to be a part of it.

My former guild was a very casual guild, and the guild leader was (almost) as dedicated as you have been in attempting to keep a balance between a social guild and keeping things open for those who wanted to raid. After a nasty guild merger and some drama, the guild disintegrated in a bright mushroom cloud one night. It took me almost two weeks to bump into this post from some guild named "Sleeper Cartel". They're name struck a bell as I remembered this crazy footrace they had planned, and I thought, "That's such a great concept! I'd love to take part in something like that!"

After a bit of talks with Karin, I parted my ways with my old guildies (who were so busy farming UBRS they only barely noticed my departure), and joined SC back in 2005. That very night I ran Gnomer with Karin and a few other guildies. My old guild never bothered to run Gnomer because none were at that level. (And everyone knows, you do NOT PuG Gnomer!) I had a phenomenal time, and knew I'd found something special.

In the two years I've been here, this guild has come through a lot and grown in ways none of us could really have a imagined. The strain of what the guild went through during a vicious guild split would have broken most, but we picked up the pieces and moved on. (Incidently, that night was my trial-by-fire...damage control under zomg drama!) Much of it was knowing what we could accomplish as a guild having just come off of our first server party, but also knowing that our leadership -- then and now -- would still support the guild in it's original efforts.

Since then (as Karin has brought up), there have been the additional server parties, the honors of getting into the Guild Relations Program (and the beta keys as a result), and a roster that's more diverse than I could ever have imagined. We work so cohesively that it's often a surprise answer -- in both directions -- to the question, "How old are you?" Sixteen year olds becoming gaming friends with fifty year olds. Couples (married or just dating) as well as entire families joining and playing together. All of this shows what a friendly atmosphere in a guild can do to inspire a sense of community.

I have this impulse now to expound on all that Karin has taught me about leadership. I could go on and on about how he's shown me how to have patience when dealing with the issues of 180 people who cross over all demographics and personality types. I could state that even sometimes he and I don't see eye to eye, but regardless...we still get along and understand where each is coming from and we put the guild first.

I could do all of that and it would come off like he's quitting WoW. Obviously he's not (yet).

SC still has much ahead of it. In the next couple of weeks we're going to have to dust off the [Tome of Server Event Planning] for the summer event (I'm targeting mid-August for a date). As Karin mentioned the GRP still hasn't really gotten it's legs, but in the meantime, I've been spending a lot of time with other GM's and officers on a Guild Roundtable where we try to figure out how to coordinate a rabble like you all. New guild services and leadership opportunities are constantly on the horizon, and I'm excited to think about each one of them.

That's not to say that there won't be rocky times ahead (zomg! guild drama!), but with a little work, we can weather the phantom storm(s) ahead. We've done it before. We can do it again.

So thank you Karin for this opportunity to take over from where you've started. I hope my shoulders can support the mantle.

A huge HUZZAH to you both.

This is such a wonderful time for you, Karin! Fourth year...wow! You've done an incredible job forming and leading this guild and I thank you for taking that vision and bringing it to life. It's certainly been a pleasure being a part of this guild with you at the helm.

And Darias. You crack me up, what can I say? You've already shown to be an exceptional leader in Karin's absense and I'm sure Calli will be able to keep you in line :) Feel free to call on me anytime for help or assistance in whatever the guild might need. Congratulations to you and to the guild!

Karin, thanks for everything you've done. I'm not one of the more talkative or involved members, but I've been in the guild for quite a while now, and I couldn't imagine a better group of people. You've started a good thing here, and it's good to see you'll still be sticking around as a member. Good luck with the studies and grad school applications.

Karin- Best of luck in your studies, and thanks for all you've done here! I hope you'll still be around to play. I levelled a character to wizard status in a text based MUDD while getting my doctorate, so I know it can be distracting. Then again, a little distraction is required, so we look forward to seeing you as you blow off some steam.

Darias- Grats! You're the perfect choice, glad to have you at the helm, and I'm up for anything I can do to help.

I haven't been in this guild all that long, though I've heard assorted tales from the guild since Mareyn has been a member. I've always been extremely impressed by the fact that you've managed to combine the relaxed, fun environment of a so-called "casual" guild with the level of organization typically found in only a handful of particularly successful uber-raid guilds.

There's a very particular reason this is so rare, imho, and it's that this level of organization requires a very dedicated guild leader, and typically guild leaders willing to be that dedicated are going to make guilds focused around that level of all-consuming dedication to the game. On top of that, of course, you have to not suck as a leader, making it even more rare a beast. So however a human like you came to exist, Karin, it's a good thing for WoW that you did.

Fortunately, given the rarity of a guild like this, I think you've managed to attract enough people of similar mindset that the guild will continue to rock mightily despite any change of leadership. Which is cool, cuz it means you've actually created something enduring.

Plus, Darias is pretty cool too from what I've seen so far. So we've got that going for us. I'm willing to follow anyone into battle so long as they can humorously photoshop images, after all.

Anyway, this is all just a bunch of babble from a relatively new face in the ol' guild. I too hope you stick around, Karin, if only because, as I've said to Mareyn a couple times now after running an instance with you, you're also just generally fun to do instances with. Even if you do have a decidedly non-masculine character name.

Karin - you have made a hard choice - but the right one! Both in your choice of putting your RL/schooling first and in your appointment of Darias as your successor. School must always come before gaming whether it's grade school, college, or just schooling to further your career. Grats to you for that choice.

Darias - I know for a fact that you will do an extraordinary job in leading this guild. Grats to you on your appointment to Leader! :)

I haven't been here from the beginning, so I can't start like that. I've been thinking for a bit on what I would say in this thread, and it's hard for me to find the words.

I came into the guild thinking it would be fun "for a while". I didn't dream that I'd stumbled into the family that everyone here has become. It's because of the tireless efforts of the administration, headed up by Big Daddy, that we are what we are.

There's lots of things I want to say, and for once, I'm speechless. There's just too much I'd like to say to really say anything. Karin, as a leader, you watch and take note and show appreciation where its due. You learn about your guild members and make them feel important and needed. You took me, a regular old member who would have probably burnt out on the tedious grind of the game long ago, gave me some responsibilities, and made me feel like an important, integral part of the guild. That's what you do for all of us - make us feel wanted, needed and important.

Darias does the same in his own way - and a way that will keep the guild on the same even keel it has been on for the past two years. The "transition of power" will be seamless, with D picking up right where K left off, doing the same things and achieving the same goals we all hold important in running a guild like this. I had complete faith in your leadership abilities, Karin, and I have complete faith in your leadership abilities as well, Darias. Ask and ye shall receive.

Thanks, to all of you, for making this guild such a home, a haven for good times, good progress and a true spirit of cooperation. I don't think it would have been possible without any one of you.

I wish I could write something as eloquently as Calli did, but I wholeheartedly agree with what she said. As silly as it sounds, I'll never forget my first guild night, when, following the festivities, I went with Pojo, Canton, and a few other guildies to Razorfen Downs. Karin escorted us there because we didn't know how to get there (even Pojo was a noob back then, I guess) and when I arrived in Theramore Karin emoted a /smile to me when he saw me. That spirit of welcoming was exhibited by Darias, too, who actually used something I linked to in the forums as a trivia question that night. So both of them were pretty much instrumental to making me feel a part of the guild from day one, which of course continued over the next several months. I'm really honored to have served with both of you; thanks for creating this awesome guild, Karin, and teaching me so much about leadership.

Darias: congratulations, and I look forward to witnessing your new Reign of Terror!

I just hope the monthly tribute won't be too high... I'm trying to save up for my epic mount.

The Sleeper Cartel is the best guild out there. Really. One might think, "Well, there's plenty of servers with plenty of guilds, SC is nothing special, etc, etc," and to be honest, when I first joined, I had the same opinion.
But Karin, you did an amazing job building up the SC (from the humble beginnings of Shadow Conspiracy *winkitywink*), and you made it into the most successful guilds in the game. Even a Blizzard rep would agree, and that's something to be proud of. From sitting at the mailbox for hours on end, to custom-coding this lovely website, to helping guildies through instances and quests, you have established the foundations of the most family-friendly, close-knit guild I have ever seen, in any game. Your dedication is boundless, and my hat goes off to you, my good sir.

And Darias was of course the obvious choice to take up leadership. If the effort he's put into guild nights and level-one-slaughtering extravaganzas (and having the patience to wade through a bucket of text to find the winners of one such event) , and sense of humor is any indication, ye have chosen wisely, and while I will not be ingame to see what awaits SC over yonder, I know it will continue to thrive as what Karin has made it.

To the SC, Karin, and Darias!
